Meet our LOVers - Wannes Verhoogen
LOVers are our ambassadors. They strengthen the LOV story by helping to spread the LOV and to build a better Leuven & Beyond. No LOV 2030 without our LOVers!
Who are you?
I’m Wannes Verhoogen, project coordinator for the redevelopment of the City Hall. The City Hall is one of the flagship projects in the LOV2030 bidbook.
What do you do?
Together with the Future Generations Lab and LOV2030, we’ve set up an exchange with Cyprus. It’s a way of bringing together ideas, people and perspectives from different places.
Why did you become a LOVer?
I’ve been a LOVer from the very beginning. I strongly believe in LOV2030, in our region and in everything that’s happening here. It is an incredible honour to be European Capital of Culture in 2030. It’s the perfect opportunity to strengthen our international profile and show what Leuven and the region have to offer.
What does LOV mean to you?
For me, LOV2030 is a unique opportunity to put our city and region in the spotlight. We have so many strengths, but we’re sometimes too modest about them. LOV2030 can make that visible. It also gives us the chance to show a wide audience what we stand for: moving forward, but doing it together.
For the City Hall project, LOV2030 means we can add an extra layer shortly after reopening. We want to develop it into a European house for democracy, with space for meeting and dialogue. That makes it all the more exciting.
LOV is all about new encounters. Who did you meet in Leuven & Beyond that gave you a LOVely feeling?
I meet inspiring people all the time. Especially those who commit themselves selflessly to others or to their neighbourhood. They really give me a warm feeling.
When was the last time you were amazed by nature?
I love cycling and running, preferably on unpaved paths. Almost every week, I’m amazed again by the beauty of our region. From the Brabantse Wouden to the rolling dirt roads and characteristic farmlands of the Hageland, to the steep hills of the Druivenstreek. We truly have it all nearby. Not to mention the stunning nature reserves you can only really experience on a long walk.
Do you think art and culture can contribute to more connection?
Absolutely. Art and culture bring people together, but they also make you think. They raise questions, spark conversations and introduce you to new perspectives. That’s essential for building real connection.
What is your favourite LOVely place in Leuven and beyond?
That’s a hard choice! Het Depot for great concerts, the festival grounds in Werchter, the Brabantse Wouden for fresh air, or Abdij van Park where I go for a run or enjoy something tasty from De Wikke or Boerencompagnie… there are simply too many beautiful places.
What do you hope for 2030?
More connection, less polarisation and a world where people show more understanding for one another.
Do you have one final LOVely thought to share?
A little kindness can make the world a much more beautiful place for everyone.
