STAD_HUIS On Tour: Dual lectures “From Parchment to Participation”
In the series of dual lectures entitled ‘From parchment to participation’, two historians explore the evolution of democracy. More lectures will follow.
Curious to find out how centuries-old documents and town halls helped lay the foundations for our democracy? Historians Jelle Haemers and Minne De Boodt take you on a journey through time.
What do historical sources and buildings tell us today about the foundations and challenges of democracy?
After the lecture, you can admire original charters and deeds in the City Archives.
About the lecture
Jelle Haemers
Jelle Haemers (KU Leuven) begins with a look at the impressive collection of charters and deeds in the City Archives. Together, we explore the context and significance of the Charter of Kortenberg (1312) and the Joyful Entry of Mary of Burgundy (1477).
Minne De Boodt
Minne De Boodt (UC Louvain) then tells us about the role of town halls in the Low Countries, with a special focus on Leuven Town Hall. What were these buildings used for? Who had access to them? And what do they tell us today about power and participation?
During the lecture, you will virtually discover some historical treasures from the City Archives and the town hall. After the lecture, you will have the opportunity to admire the original charters and deeds in the City Archives.
This activity is part of STAD_HUIS On Tour.
STAD_HUIS On Tour
Did you know that Leuven's iconic town hall is temporarily closed for restoration? That's why we're bringing this inspiring meeting place to you. At various locations throughout the city, we invite you to reflect, engage in dialogue and take action.
This autumn's theme is “democracy”. Because democracy is something you create yourself, every day. And sitting still is certainly not an option today. Turn inspiration into action or speak up yourself during an event.
On the programme:
- sofa conversations “Thinkers on democracy”,
- documentaries “The Five of Vranckx”,
- duo lectures “From parchment to participation”,
- exhibition “The Democracy Factory” for schools,
- and an innovation lab for young people “Future Generation Lab”.
